Hitchin town centre was alive with community spirit last Friday, as the third annual Hertfordshire Volunteers’ Fair took over the market square and high street. Hosted by GoVolHerts, the county’s home of volunteering and a project by North Herts & Stevenage CVS (NH&SCVS), the event drew hundreds of visitors eager to explore how they could give back to their local community.
With over 20 charities and organisations in attendance – from Age UK Hertfordshire and Mind in Mid-Herts to Willow Foundation and MCR Pathways – the fair gave the public a unique opportunity to meet the people behind the services that keep the country thriving. Attendees discovered volunteering opportunities that matched their interests, skillsets, and availability, whilst charities shared their stores, needs, and real-life impact.
Beyond volunteer recruitment, the fair delivered something even more powerful: a strong message about the vital role of the voluntary and community sector in our area.
As the central hub uniting this diverse sector, NH&SCVS is proud to champion local charities. The success of this year’s Volunteers’ Fair reinforces our belief that when we come together – charities, volunteers, and community leaders alike – we can not only highlight the extraordinary work happening in our neighbourhoods but also build lasting public awareness and support.
In today’s social and economic climate, voluntary groups are facing increased pressure – rising demand, limited funding, and a need for more hands-on-deck. By showcasing their impact and inviting new people into the world of volunteering, the fair helps ensure these organisations can continue their essential work.
Volunteer fairs like this also challenge common misconceptions about volunteering. It’s not just about giving time – it's about gaining confidence, skills, friendships, and a deeper connection to your community.
