Backing the Backbone of Our Community

At the heart of every thriving community are the people quietly driving change — those running small charities, local projects, and grassroots initiatives. People like Vicky Wyer, founder and Chair of Trustees at the Triangle Community Garden in Hitchin, who gives her time and energy to ensure their nature-based programmes reach those who need them most. Whether it’s nature connection, horticultural therapy, or forest school, their work brings meaningful change to people of all ages.

For Vicky who last month celebrated 25 years of the Triangle Garden, her work there involves the wearing of multiple hats — from strategy and comms to funding and events — and with that comes challenges that so many small charity leaders will recognise. “Life as a CEO/Chair of Trustees can be lonely and weighty,” she shares. That’s where our NH&SCVS CEO Network comes in. "I’ve found the CEO Network invaluable,” says Vicky, “for networking and insights into how other charities small and large are dealing with the multiple crises we’re all facing.”

NH&SCVS CEO Network

The network offers a supportive, confidential space where real conversations happen — without pressure or pretence. The format is relaxed, the discussions are open, and each session is shaped by those who attend. Presentations mix with informal sharing, allowing space to tackle individual challenges, celebrate successes, and test new ideas with peers who truly understand. “People have come to the meetings with honesty, openness and a willingness to share, and although many have not been able to make every meeting, there are enough of us each month to make them meaningful.” Vicky explains.

A recent session even sparked important conversations about climate action when Vicky introduced Take the Jump, a science-backed campaign advocating for six simple lifestyle changes that align with planetary boundaries. It reminded everyone in the room that, while systemic change is critical, individuals also hold real power to make a difference. Whether it’s eating more plant-based meals, reducing flights, or making conscious choices around fashion and transport — these shifts bring us closer to Net Zero and closer to joy.
