In a world that can often feel noisy, rushed and uncertain, a new local campaign is asking a simple but powerful question: what if each of us chose, in our own way, to be the good?
Launched this spring, the Be The Good campaign is a call to action for our community - not just to notice the good around us, but to take part in it.
Whether that’s offering a few hours of your time, sharing your skills, or simply showing up for a local cause, the message is clear: small actions, multiplied across a community, can make a profound difference.
Start small, start here
For many, the idea of volunteering can feel daunting or time-consuming. But this campaign is intentionally different. It’s not about grand gestures or long-term commitments. It’s about accessible, everyday opportunities to contribute - the kind that fit around real lives, responsibilities and routines. From helping at a local food bank, to supporting community events, to lending a hand at a charity shop, there are countless ways to get involved.
North Herts & Stevenage CVS sits at the heart of this effort, working quietly behind the scenes to support the charities, groups and volunteers who keep our communities connected. They are not just another organisation - they are a bridge, linking people who want to help with the causes that need them most. Their role is simple but vital: to make doing good easier.
Volunteers are needed more than ever
And the need has never been greater. Local charities continue to face rising demand, while many are stretched for time, resources and people. At the same time, there are individuals across North Hertfordshire and Stevenage who want to help - they just don’t always know where to start. Be The Good exists to close that gap.
This is just the beginning. In the coming months, the campaign will bring people together through a series of welcoming, community-focused events. Residents are invited to attend the Volunteer Fair in Letchworth Garden City on Saturday 16th May in the Wynd, where they can meet local organisations and discover opportunities that suit them. There will also be a Hertfordshire-wide event in Hitchin on Friday 5th June, hosted by GoVolHerts, offering even more ways to get involved.
