For many, a weekly visit to a Wellbeing Hub isn’t just a social outing - it’s a lifeline.
These sessions offer more than activities; they provide connection, routine, and support for people who might otherwise feel isolated. Thanks to the determination of Jeanette Farrow, and the right support at the right time, that lifeline continues today through Caring Herts CIC.
How it all began...
Jeanette’s journey began in 2018 at Garden House Hospice, where she led the Compassionate Neighbours programme across Hertfordshire. The initiative connected volunteers with people experiencing loneliness, frailty, or living with life-limiting conditions - building meaningful, one-to-one relationships within the community.
As demand grew, so did the offer. The first Wellbeing Hub launched in the Arts and Leisure Community Centre in Stevenage, creating a welcoming weekly space for people to come together. Sessions combined gentle exercise, social time, and activities like music, crafts and talks - all supported by volunteers and informed by specialist input.
Over time, the impact was significant. What started as a single programme evolved into a network of 15 hubs, hundreds of volunteers, and support reaching close to 1,000 people each week.
But by the end of 2025, funding challenges put the entire service at risk.
Rather than let it come to an end, Jeanette took action.
A new beginning
In January 2026, she began working with North Herts & Stevenage CVS to explore how the service could continue. With guidance on setting up a new organisation, practical support through the transition, and advice on sustainability, Caring Herts CIC was quickly established.
That support helped turn a critical moment into a new beginning.
Today, all 15 hubs are still running - some in new locations - supported by a combination of small session fees, community fundraising, and volunteer expertise. Staff roles were retained where possible, and local people stepped forward to help, from financial support to professional skills offered pro bono.
Looking ahead, the ambition is to grow. Plans include partnerships to tackle digital exclusion and transport barriers, as well as closer links with health services to bring support even closer to the community.
Jeanette’s determination has been nothing short of inspiring, and we’re proud to stand alongside her as Caring Herts CIC continues to grow and support communities across Hertfordshire.
How to show your support
The official launch of Caring Herts will take place at the Stevenage Arts and Leisure Community Centre on 27th April, 10:30–12:30 - a celebration not just of a new organisation, but of what’s possible when community action is backed by the right support. Community Members, councillors, and local officials will celebrate with cake, balloons, and t-shirts. All supporters are welcome.
